TY - JOUR T1 - Will the Annual Bibliography of France History Survive the 'New Technologies' Turn?: A Last Attempt to Enter the Twenty-First Century JF - Journal of Scholarly Publishing Y1 - 2014 A1 - Gérald Péoux AB -

This article describes the situation that a team of bibliographers has had to confront in the technological era that emerged in the last decade of the twentieth century. The scholarly publication at stake is the Annual Bibliography of France History, which comes from a long tradition originating in the late nineteenth century. Since the 1950s, a volume has been published each year, and each volume lists about twelve thousand references that pertain to works on the history of France from late antiquity to 1958. These references are classified among several indexes. Since 2000, several attempts to put that ‘native paper database’ online have been aborted. This article gives an account of the last attempt, which started in 2011, and shows that institutional problems, technical issues, and cultural questions are so deeply entangled together that we must embrace all those aspects in order to have a chance of success.

In the context of increasing interest in many countries in web archiving and how it may best serve the needs of researchers, especially in the expanding field of Internet studies for social sciences, a qualitative study was performed, based on interviews with potential users of the web archives held at the {BnF}, and particularly researchers working in various areas related to the Internet. The study aimed to explore their needs in terms of both content and services, and also to analyse different ways of representing the archives, in order to identify ways of increasing their use. While the interest of maintaining the "memory" of the web is obvious to the researchers, they are faced with the difficulty of defining, in what is a seemingly limitless space, meaningful collections of documents. Cultural heritage institutions such as national libraries are perceived as trusted third parties capable of creating rationally-constructed and well-documented collections, but such archives raise certain ethical and methodological questions. Emmanuelle Bermès et Clément Oury analysent cette question fondamentale de la pérennité et de la fixité des contenus à la fois sous un angle technique et philosophique et expliquent comment les institutions patrimoniales se sont emparées du problème.
