  abstract = {The challenge of bringing metadata-based order to the World Wide Web to facilitate information retrieval has persisted for nearly twenty years. One popular front-runner known as the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (\\{DCMES\\}, or “Dublin Core”) answered the challenge with a flexible, simple system: fifteen optional descriptive elements that could be built into a variety of syntaxes for use and retrieval. A variety of national agencies and international consortiums encouraged Dublin Core adoption, but early critics like Thomas and Griffin (1998) warned that “although a common metadata standard like Dublin Core does offer much promise, it may be useless if it is not implemented widely.” This study explores Dublin Core implementation on the Internet by replicating previous research on metadata use across randomly selected websites as well as homepages belonging to National Libraries (\\{NL\\}) around the world such as the Library of Congress (U.S.), the National Library of Thailand, or Biblioth\`eque Nationale de France. The study considers two hypotheses: first, that contemporary public and \\{NL\\} website creators continue to be not sufficiently motivated to include any metadata in their source code; and second, that Dublin Core use in website source code continues to be remarkably infrequent. These hypotheses support critical observations on the failure to implement use of Dublin Core or any other metadata system on the World Wide Web. While the data show little change from previous counts of Dublin Core use in website source code as predicted, the majority of randomly-selected and National Library contemporary websites do include at least one metadata tag. The author concludes that the financial reward of increased findability may be a significant motivator reflected in this increase of metadata use.},

  abstract = {Libraries conserve cultural heritage, communicate information, and support discovery; as a result, they find themselves central to debates over relationships that they should foster between readers and their collections. Technological innovations nourish paradoxical reactions, both encouraging us to fetishize borderless communities based on verbal modes of being and spawning resistance. I argue that the imminent fading of a certain library culture is related not only to our fears of manipulation and technological failure but also to our allegiance to architectural and material search engines that played an important role in the cultural production of scholarship as we know it and that were enshrined in a previous era of significant library transformation, the nineteenth century. Major debates accompanied well-publicized efforts to provide France’s premier library, the Biblioth\`eque Nationale, with an adequate physical infrastructure, facilitate research through the production of comprehensive catalogues, and orchestrate the signature activities that occur in libraries, namely reading and writing. This reflection supports the contention that our identification with certain fading forms of library culture ignores our most striking commonalities with this earlier period: experiences of temporal disjuncture and simultaneous distress over the prospect of infinite consumption and production, frustration at our inability to order knowledge, and fear of potential loss in social status. In more clearly recognizing ourselves and our fields as contingent cultural products, we free ourselves to imagine ways in which the library transformations might change the cultural production of scholars and beyond, create conditions conducive to the reinvention of scholarship.},

The fast development and large success of social network platforms have led many cultural institutions as well as libraries to show an interest in this medium by using them as a way of promoting their services and providing a new type of access to their collections. Starting from a reflection on the nature of these di-verse networks, the present essay aims at assessing the degree of presence of the BnF on the main social networks and describing the way users interact as well as the way these interactions have changed the relationship between the public and the institution. Although social networks are often considered as spaces without qualities, full of sounds and rumours and devoid of the values usually attached to a library, they nevertheless provide the BnF with an opportunity to experiment with a new type of relationship with its users that takes into account the forms of online sociability the web gave rise to, thus making the In-ternet an instrument of renewal for libraries.},
